More Than a Trophy: The Sheamus Howlin Cup Honors a Legacy
This past weekend the Tipperary Hurling Club of San Francisco had the honor of lifting the Sheamus Howlin Cup at Gaelic Park in Chicago, a trophy that carries deep meaning not only for our club but for the entire North American hurling community.

As we boarded our flight to San Francisco, we took time to reflect on the man behind the name—Sheamus Howlin, a lifelong servant of the GAA, a visionary leader, and a tireless advocate for the growth of Gaelic games beyond Ireland’s shores. His efforts, especially as the first Chair of the GAA Overseas Committee, helped lay the foundation for the vibrant and growing USGAA scene we are part of today.
To win a competition that bears his name is a privilege. To do so in the spirit of competitive excellence, camaraderie, and community that he championed makes the achievement even more meaningful.
At Tipperary San Francisco, our mission has always been to grow hurling here in the Bay Area. But we know we’re part of something bigger—a movement that’s spreading Irish sport across America and around the world. The Sheamus Howlin Cup is a testament to that progress, and a reminder of the people who made it possible.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Chicago GAA for hosting a top-class weekend of hurling and to USGAA for continuing to build on Sheamus Howlin’s vision. We’re proud to be part of this community, and proud to carry this cup back to California.
